Website Kick-Off!

What is 411 Community Read?

When we started out, we didn’t know what we were getting into. Suzanne Collins had recently finished her Hunger Games trilogy, and we were all collectively stunned. It had been a while since we read something this good.  We had heard rumors about a movie being made about this intense story, and more rumors that the movie was being made in North Carolina.  It turned out that all those rumors happened to be true.

Then in July of 2011 we decided that we needed to do something about it.  So there was a gathering of county librarians and parks and recreation staff who sat down and collectively decided that  we needed to plan out something epic.    Here are the four North Carolinian counties that came together:  Cabarrus, Rowan, Stanly, and Union.  The event we decided to create was the 411 Community Read;  4 Districts (the Counties), 1 book, 1 Community.

What we have planned out is more than just a community read, it’s going to be a community event.  We didn’t just want people to just read the book.  We wanted them to experience  it.  So yes, not only are we going to encourage everyone in the Four Counties (Districts) to read and discuss this epic story, we are going to give you the opportunity live it out.  Every county will have their own Survival Training Day filled with obstacles and athletic and mental challenges that are inspired by what you’ve seen in the Arena during the Hunger Games books.  Conquer the Survival Training Day in your county to maximize your experience, or head directly to the main event on October 13th at the Cabarrus Arena to compete to be the Grand Champion.

As awesome as that is, we figured that even this wasn’t enough.  So we’ve planned several contests that will be going on until September.  Be sure to enter in so that you get the chance to win some really cool prizes.  So whether you’re good with art, film, writing, or even costume design, there is something for you to get involved with.  If you’re looking for others who are as excited about The Hunger Games as you are, we’ve got lots of book discussions where you can have your say and hear what others think. There are even some lectures planned with topics centered around the book.

So check back soon, and check back often.   There’s going to be a lot of things happening on this site.

We will see you soon, and until then Read it.  Do it.  Survive It.

  1. From viewing the site there appears to be nothing about ages. Can you please add this information so that everyone will know? Will parents be able to attend with children?

    • Hi Ingrid,

As a running rule our book discussions are open from teens to adults. Parents are welcome to come and participate in the discussion as well. Please let me know if you have anymore questions. Our contests are limited from 6th graders to 12th graders, however.

Thanks and let me know if you have anymore questions!

  2. The art and writing contests are open to adults too! And the art contest has a short fuse – August 22 is the entry deadline.

  3. Lexi Petruccelli

After all of the entries are entered how long will it be untill we find out the winners? Will you post their names and entry on the website? One more thing, how do the people entering the contest no how many other people entered in that contest too

    • Lexi,

We are still gathering up entries. Right now the only deadline that that has passed is the entry for the art contest. The other deadlines are for September 14, 2012.

      Kind regards,

      411 Community Read
